According to a report from Click Orlando, a Florida man has been arrested in connection with a string of robberies committed against United States Postal Service (USPS) workers in the region. Darius Capers was taken into custody by federal law enforcement officers. Mr. Capers is facing charges for three separate robberies involving USPS workers. Here, our Orlando criminal defense lawyer discusses the allegations and the charges.
Allegations: Several USPS Workers Robbed in October of 2022
Federal prosecutors have charged Darius Capers of Florida with three separate robberies of USPS workers. All three robberies occurred in October of 2022—within one in Orange County, one in Orlando, and one in Tampa. During at least one of the incidents, the assailant—whose face was covered—was observed with a firearm in his waistband. Investigators purportedly used surveillance footage and vehicle information to connect Mr. Capers to the crime. As with all defendants, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He is facing federal criminal charges for:
- Robbery of a mail carrier with receipt of possession or stolen USPS property.
Theft or Receipt Stolen Mail is a Federal Criminal Offense
Robbery of a mail carrier with receipt of possession or stolen USPS property is a serious criminal charge that carries severe penalties. This type of crime involves the theft of property from a mail carrier while they are performing their duties. The charge is typically brought against individuals who steal mail or packages from mail carriers, as well as those who receive or possess stolen mail or packages knowing they were taken illegally.
Under federal law (18 U.S. Code § 1708), theft or receipt of stolen mail is a serious felony offense that carries maximum criminal penalties of up to five years in prison. A person accused of stealing mail through the use of physical force—a robbery—could face even more serious criminal charges. Beyond federal prison time, a conviction under 18 U.S. Code § 1708 can also carry significant financial penalties.
