Doctor In South Florida Arrested On Child Sex Crime Offense After Tip From Authorities

Telemedicine3

In April of 2024, The Palm Beach Post reported that Thomas Lipin—a licensed physician from Jupiter, Florida who has been practicing medicine for more than three decades—has been arrested and charged with a child pornography offense. Dr. Lipin was arrested as part of an investigation by the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Within this article, our Orlando child pornography defense attorney provides a more detailed overview of the allegations and the charges brought in this very serious case.

The Allegations: Doctor has Explicit, Sexual Images of Children on Computer

Thomas Lipin is a licensed physician who has been practicing medicine in Palm Beach County, Florida for more than three decades. On April 9th, 2024, local law enforcement officers took Dr. Lipin into custody. He has since been charged with felony child pornography offense. As reported by The Palm Beach Post, Dr. Lipin was allegedly caught with “20 explicit images of children” on his home computer. Some of the children pictured in the images were of a very young age.

The investigation in this case started back in the Fall of 2023. As reported, the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children received information from Apple that images containing “child-abuse material” were sent by and received by email addresses that have been linked to Dr. Lipin. In February, law enforcement obtained a search warrant for the doctor’s home. Several electronic devices were seized. He has been released on $50,000 bail.

An Overview of the Child Sex Crimes Charges Filed

The doctor in this case is facing three felony criminal charges. They are all federal crimes. Specifically, the doctor is currently facing charges for:

  • Possessing Child Pornography (Two Counts): It is unlawful to possess images of children in a sexual context.
  • Transmitting Child Pornography (One Count): Transmitting child sex abuse material—including through email—is a separate felony offense.

Both charges are felony criminal offenses. A conviction could carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Every Defendant is Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty

The doctor from Palm Beach County has been arrested and charged, but not convicted of any criminal offense. All defendants in Florida are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. It is the responsibility of the prosecution to prove the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt before any punishment can be imposed. No matter how serious the allegations a person is facing—including child pornography allegations—they have the right to raise a zealous defense.
